What possesses a person to go so high, lose so much energy and take such risks, just to reach that one summit? After 15 years of mountaineering as an amateur and without sponsorship, I climbed the summit of Manaslu in Nepal (8163 m) in 2023 (2nd attempt). Higher and higher in the previous years and finally achieved a goal that was impossible for me. Focus, drive and perseverance can lead to much beauty and inspire others not to give up, despite setbacks. I made a documentary and wrote a book (That One Moment, T. ten Klooster, 2024).
Presentation consists of Introduction, explanation with slides and documentary.
Tim ten Klooster, 63 years old, living in Zwolle. As a child fascinated by mountains. After my divorce started climbing the highest mountains in the Alps, sometimes together with my wife.
In 9 years more than 25x 4000m+ mountains climbed, as amateur of course with guides.
From 2017 higher mountains in Russia, Kyrgistan and Nepal, until the failed ascent of the Manaslu in Nepal in 2022. Still made another attempt in 2023, again without sponsorship and after much saving and I made it to the top! full hallicun and exhausted, this led to 2 days of hospitalization in Kathmandu. Perseverance, drive and support from the 'home front' led to this, for me, improbable climb after 15 years. I wrote
a book about it; 'That one Moment', available via Boekenbestellen.nl (no publisher, printing on demand) and had a documentary made.
