René van Kooten studied history of international relations at Utrecht University. He took singing lessons with Jimmy Hutchinson and Edward Hoepelman and playing lessons with Henny Kaan, Petra Laseur, Tom de Ket, Hajo Bruins and Kitty Courbois.
Theatre
René is currently touring all theatres in the Netherlands with the performance Into the Woods.
He recently performed in Sweeney Todd, Grease (Vince Fontaine), Kiss of a Spiderwoman (Valentin), Onder de Groene Hemel (Jimmy), Played in Jersey Boys (Tommy de Vito), Aspects of Love (ALEX), Next To Normal (Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine), Urinetown (agent Knuppel), All Shook Up (Chad) and Joseph (Pharaoh).
René played an impressive number of characters in musicals including Jean Valjean in Les Misérables (John Kraaijkamp Musical Award for Best Male Principal), Zorro
(Ramon), Into The Woods (Wolf and Cinderella Prince), Beauty And The Beast (Gaston and The Beast), Hair (Claude), Hamelin (Bertram Bierenbroodspot), Aida (Radames), Miss Saigon, Elisabeth, Drie Stuivers Opera and Tommy.
Miscellaneous
René is also singer/guitarist of Shifting Daylight (Theatertour 2016/2017/2018). He did the dubbing of Maui in Vaiana, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Prince Edward in Disney's Enchanted and for the Chechnya in The Lorax and the vanished forest. René was also featured in Good Times Bad Times and played Jesus in The Passion 2013.
René received a lot of praise for his performance in Best Singers 2016, where he showed his versatility beautifully: from delicious musicalsong, to Rock, from subdued songs to bombastic show songs!
