Passionate. That’s the word that best describes Roel van Velzen. Because whether you
know him as a singer, pianist, songwriter, talent coach, or entertainer, Roel never does anything halfway.

“Baby Get Higher” turned out to be the launchpad for a long career. He went on to score hits with the movie ballad
“When Summer Ends,” the energetic “Love Song,” and the rousing “The Rush Of Life.” He collaborated
with Kenyan and Congolese artists on the album *Call It Luck*, recorded the
moving duet *Sing Sing Sing* with his father, and even had an
international trance hit with Armin van Buuren on the song *Broken Tonight*.

He has won several awards, including a Platinum Album and a Golden Harp for
his contribution to Dutch music. However, he himself cites his 3FM
Award for Best Live Act. Anyone who’s ever seen Roel perform live understands why he’s so happy about it.
Like no other artist in the Netherlands, Roel knows how to “read” his audience: everyone in the venue becomes an
active part of the show. The VanVelzen band is a well-oiled machine that, under Roel’s
direction, brings the house down. They play VanVelzen hits, but also regularly perform songs by Roel’s
heroes: Queen, U2, and The Police.

The Netherlands first got to know him as an improvisational pianist and the “house band” on DWDD, and
later as an energetic and articulate coach on The Voice of Holland. After his divorce, Roel shows
a different side of himself: in collaboration with LINDA., he creates an inspiring and
widely listened-to podcast titled “Roel’s Sofa Sessions,” in which he speaks candidly with friends
and colleagues.

Roel is also highly skilled in Dutch: he wrote an EP featuring the moving track “Nu Het Er
Op Aankomt, joins forces with rapper Diggy Dex to release “Glas Omhoog,” and
together with Paul de Munnik, writes lyrics for Roel’s appearance on “Beste Zangers,” with “Jij Maakt
Muziek” as the emotional highlight.

In addition to all this, Roel is a member of the supergroup The Streamers, provided the musical
accompaniment for the past seven Team NL Olympic houses, and has been a regular at
Vrienden van Amstel for years. The common thread running through all of this? Roel won’t rest until he’s made a musical connection
with his audience.
