Introduction to djembe music through images from Mali and Guinea. Then the participants get to work themselves with different percussion instruments. For fun and togetherness.
Rutger van der Ree discovers the djembe in 1985 at Ponda O'Brian's in one of the few djembe classes that were available in Amsterdam at the time. Inadequate information about the djembe and a good dose of curiosity motivates him to make several visits to the source in Mali and Guinea in the years 1987 to 1997. Result: a lot of dust biting and a lot of observing during the numerous feasts in which he keeps getting stuck. He is apprenticed to grandmaster Famoudou Konate and Numodi Keita.
In 1987 he met Sega Sidibe at the Carrefour des Jeunes in Bamako, the capital of Mali, from whom he would learn a lot, to this day. "I couldn't have imagined that
he would be my annual guest for giving workshops. Life is full of surprises."
Another surprise is the meeting with Mamoudou Keita Delmundo, with whom he founded Africa Sabou Njouma in 1993. Delmundo's infectious drive creates a close-knit group that will work together for 7 years. With the group he returns to Guinea. There the adventure awaits in the streets, at the various ballets in Conakry, and inland in the village of Kato. Again he gathers knowledge, but now he also performs for the masses of villagers. After this tour in Guinea in 1996 a live registration comes out under the title "Doundoun Diarra". In 1998 the CD "House of Roots" follows
The following years he plays with changing ensembles, and concentrates on giving workshops and lessons. He also takes care of the weekly percussion at dance classes of various dance teachers. Every year he receives grandmaster Sega Sidibe from Bamako, Mali, and travels with him through the Netherlands and Europe to give djembeworkshops and performances.
Drumming brings people together and is good for body and mind. Through the joint effort, place and time fade away and a musical universe opens up.
