Ranya is an English-language songwriter from Alkmaar, the Netherlands, who combines intricate songs with catchy melodies. His surprising pop songs push the boundaries of songwriting, without ever losing sight of the audience. Ranya is the stage name of songwriter Arjan Terpstra. Years of experience in bands led to a unique approach to writing pop songs, resulting in catchy, original songs and melodies. In terms of style, there are hints of folk and Americana, yet nineties pop and progressive rock are never far away in the songs.

Much attention has also been paid to the lyrics, which find depth in everyday things. A changing day for divorced parents, an email from an old love or a heart's cry about climate: Terpstra talks about it clearly and poignantly.

A melodic fingerpicking guitar style forms the musical basis, followed by English-language vocals that sit somewhere between Patrick Watson and Anthony and the Johnsons and acts such as David Sylvian and Pearl Jam.

Born as a solo act during covid, Ranya highlights Terpstra's goal of breaking new ground as a songwriter and performer. In January 2023, the EP The Friends we Are was released, followed by live shows at places like Wisseloord Studios, Rotown Rotterdam, Vredenburg Utrecht and the Yes In My BackYard Festival Alkmaar.
