Mark Tuitert is a former long track speed skater. He became Olympic champion in the 1500 meters in Vancouver on February 20, 2010. On December 14, 2010, he was voted 2010 Sportsman of the Year. He announced his retirement from the sport of skating in 2014. Meanwhile, he is active as an entrepreneur, he is founder of First Energy Gum, as a
TV analyst at NOS, fitness coach at FitChannel and ambassador of Vitality Network Netherlands.
Mark made his debut at the European All-Around Championships in 2001. At that time the title was lost to him due to a fall, he was first in the standings at that time. The European title did come. In 2004 he claimed first place in a full Thialf. After failing to find further success, Tuitert decided to specialize in the short and medium distances. A successful choice, as he twice managed to win the World Cup final classification in the 1,500 meters. After several difficult years, with several setbacks, he quite unexpectedly won the 1,500 meters at the 2010 Olympics. In a sensational race, he managed to beat all the favorites. After his participation in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Mark Tuitert ended his skating career. He bid farewell in front of his own audience in a sold-out Thialf at the end of the winter of 2014 and could look back with satisfaction on a successful top sporting career.
