Title: 100% Self-steering does not exist
You can't open a management magazine or visit an organizational advice website, or you'll come across the term 'Self-directed teams'. It has taken on the proportions of a hype. And as is so often the case with hypes, the situation before the hype is completely renounced and the new 100% embraced. And if you don't participate, you don't understand. With hindsight it often turns out that there was a lot of good about the situation before the hype. And that not everything is good about the new ideas, or that elements turn out to be practically unfeasible. Then a new balance arises between the situation before and after the hype. This is also the case with self-management.
In this lecture
I will discuss the concept of 'self-determination' and why it is such a popular concept now. Then I will show that the successes that have been achieved also have a downside. In order to understand how this can be done, I will show which fundamental causes are often not addressed when implementing self-management. To then indicate how you can implement it successfully and the balance between before and after the hype can be achieved. Let me give you a hint: management still needs HARD. Even with self-managing teams!
One of my frequent statements is: 'If you didn't do it wrong first, you can't advise others'. I approach self-management not only from theory, but also from practice. For 10 years I have had a so-called Learning Organization, my own company, and in practice I have been able to experience very closely how self-management really works. And above all, how it does NOT work. I like to share my knowledge and experience with the world.
