Bas Tietema is a former professional cyclist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the successful YouTube channel Tour de Tietema. He is now the driving force behind the professional cycling team Unibet Tietema Rockets, with which he is working step by step to secure a permanent place among the world’s top cyclists. His story revolves around perseverance, entrepreneurship, and the belief that passion is the foundation of success.
About Bas Tietema
Bas Tietema was born in Zwolle in 1995. His athletic career began on the soccer field, where he played for years in the PEC Zwolle youth academy. However, a serious cruciate ligament injury cut his soccer ambitions short.
At the age of fifteen, he discovered cycling. With his first road bike—which he bought himself—he began training in the Zwolle area. His talent did not go unnoticed: within a few years, he was accepted into the BMC Development Team, at the time one of the most renowned development teams in the world.
As a U23 rider, Bas achieved impressive results. For example, he finished third in the U23 edition of Paris-Roubaix and won the bronze medal at the 2017 Dutch
Time Trial Championship.
Due to health issues, Bas decided to change course in 2019. Although his own cycling career was temporarily put on the back burner, his passion for the sport remained as strong as ever. He focused on creating new opportunities within the cycling world, which ultimately led to the creation of Tour de Tietema and later the professional cycling team Unibet Tietema Rockets.
In addition to his work in cycling, Bas is actively involved in para-sports. Since 2016, he has served as an ambassador for the Para-Sports Fund. His commitment is personal: his sister Iris was born with Down syndrome. He has seen firsthand how much sports can mean to people with disabilities. That is why he is passionately committed to a society in which everyone—young or old, with or without a disability—has the opportunity to participate in sports and enjoy physical activity.
