In 2000, Annemieke Raatsie's life went completely upside down. She was diagnosed with cancer aggressive, rare and, according to the doctors, she had two years to live. But those who know Annemieke know that predictions do not apply to her.
With grueling surgeries, medical experiments, hope fluctuating and care changing at times, Annemieke discovered a unique way to cope with her illness, which she has now carried with her for more than 25 years. She still has cancer, and it has metastasized but she lives - full, intense and in her own way.
That is what makes her story raw, honest and surprisingly light.
In addition to her personal journey, Annemieke also takes the audience behind the scenes of the television world, where she has worked for years as a recording supervisor on major TV programs. Expect funny, recognizable and sometimes moving anecdotes from that world, stories about what really happens on and behind the set, with celebrities, crews and unexpected
situations that sometimes say more about life than you think.
She knows better than anyone how to make a story really come in. Touching, comforting and with humor where you don't expect it. Now she finds it time to share her emotions, insights and life lessons and give the audience a good dose of positivity!
"Happy with Cancer" is not a classic lecture, but her own story. It's about hope, fear, loss, joy and everything in between. About the moments when things are going well, and the moments when things are just downright k*t. With lots of interaction, sharp observations and a healthy dose of self-mockery, Annemieke takes the audience into an experience that touches and connects.
Don't focus on what you don't have, but on everything you do have.

Annemieke Raatsie is not to be missed as recording director of Eus'Book Club. She is tireless in enthusing the audience and puts each guest in a warm-welcome bath. She is open about her special medical situation and hopefully will remain a special situation for a very long time.

I got to know Annemieke Raatsie in the 1989 period when we with Biodermal were one of the main sponsors of the 5-hour show at RTL, where Drs. Hans Schreuder gave weekly skin and product advice. At that time, Annemieke was already working as a recording manager. The following years I saw her grow into one of the best recording leaders in the business, someone with a natural calm, a warm heart and a special presence ! She was professional , reliable and knew how to keep an overview in every hectic situation ! In the year 2000 our paths crossed again , at the opening of the Cancer Centre in Amsterdam . Prof Dr Bob Pinedo asked me if I would take care of her , that request touched me, and I did it with love out of sincere commitment and because I felt she needed someone to stand beside her ! What followed was an intense and emotional journey that I experienced up close. The conversations with the doctors, the tension around the operations, the moments in the ICU ... they were heavy, vulnerable and heartbreaking days ! But in that period I saw the true strength of Annemieke! The setbacks shaped her into a fighter for life - someone who, in spite of everything continued to choose for progress, for life, for light. Annemieke wanted to live in optima forma, and she lived up to that with an almost unbelievable willpower ! Her courage, her perseverance, her ability to keep going despite fear and uncertainty - it is admirable and moving at the same time. She stood and stands, her ground, with a unique combination of gentleness and intransigence. Now that she has changed tack and is using her story to inspire others, I believe that is exactly what she needs to do ! Her experiences and insights, her openness, it can be a support to many peers ! Anyone who has to go through a struggle for survival and is looking for support, strength and hope ! Courageous, combative, verbally clear and powerful in every detail ! Annemieke is a source of inspiration ! Her story is not only instructive, but touches and continues to touch.

We go back many years, Annemieke and I. Still to the time when I christened her Pipi (after Longstocking) because she was jumping on her bed 24 hours after major surgery. From her "patron," renowned oncologist Bob Pinedo, she was asked to serve as an "illustration" at a lecture. On that occasion, she had to address the audience, and she did so with a flair and expertise that baffled even me. While the images were quite gruesome. Never afterward has Annemieke been too reluctant to share her story with people. Now that she has had cancer for almost 25 years, the time is ripe to become a bit more broadly active about it. A meeting like a warm embrace. Bert van der Veer, journalist and TV-maker

In the past few years that Annemieke has been a patient of mine at Amsterdam UMC, I have come to know her as an incredibly positive woman who is dealing with her cancer in a unique way. Despite the poor prognosis, she has never given up and the way she has lived with cancer for 25 years is impressive. Her outlook and way of life gives others hope to not get caught up in what is possible and to fully enjoy what is still possible. If anyone can convey that on stage with flair, it is Annemieke!

By now I have also known Annemieke for over a quarter of a century. I have had the great privilege of sitting across from Annemieke for many hours as a one-man audience while she talked about her life. After all, I am writing her biography (scheduled for 2027) and believe me, her stories are what you want to hear. Of course, the fact that she has had cancer for 25 years forms a large part of it, but she has so much more to tell. Her life is a rare blend of humor and horror, of poignancy and dismay, of joy and sadness. Annemieke represents flair, resilience and perseverance, she is super-social, welcoming and empathetic, but she can also be a fury. A unique personality and a great storyteller, warm ánd recommended!

Of the thousands of patients I have counseled in my 50-plus years as an oncologist, Annemieke is 1 of my great success stories, indeed a miracle patient. She came to me in 2000 with a poor prognosis, but she would not resign herself to that. So we entered a non-standard course with dozens of radical surgeries, including an experimental nuclear treatment in Nantes and even after the diagnosis she had a healthy son who is now an adult. She never gave up and is an inspiring example to others. Annemieke gave a great speech at a fundraiser at the VU to make the Cancer Center Amsterdam a reality. This brought in many donations. She can address, motivate and activate people like no other!

Annemiek filled in for the chairman of a major political party last minute, making the stage entirely hers. Her presentation was warm, narrative and deeply moving. With her spontaneous arrival, Annemiek made the charity dinner a great success.
