A business administration graduate of Nyenrode Business University, Yesim Candan has profiled herself as a champion of diversity from the beginning of her career. She introduced the term bicultural as a positive and contemporary alternative to the loaded word allochtoon, and with the national contest Inspiration for Integration (IVI), which she initiated, dedicated herself to making visible new perspectives on living together in the Netherlands.

In 2010 she received the Aletta van Nu Prize from Atria, the knowledge institute for emancipation, in recognition of her contribution to the social debate. A year later, her first book Nederland Word Wakker! was
published and in 2015, in collaboration with de Volkskrant and the Rijksmuseum, she compiled a list of the fifty most influential Turkish Dutch people.
For five years, Yesim wrote weekly columns for RTLNieuws.nl and contributed essays for FD Persoonlijk. She also replaced Ronald Plasterk for six months with weekly columns in De Telegraaf and appeared several times as a guest columnist with de Volkskrant. Nowadays she writes probing columns about intimate terror for LINDA. and lifestyle articles for VROUW.
