In March 2026, politician Richard de Mos won the municipal elections in The Hague by a landslide. Following the subsequent coalition negotiations, he took office on July 16, 2026, as alderman for Economic Affairs, International Affairs, and the Southwest National Program, as well as first deputy mayor of The Hague.
This lecture focuses on resilience, leadership, and overcoming adversity, with De Mos sharing his personal experiences.
Richard de Mos – Lecture on Resilience, Leadership, and Winning Under Pressure
Richard de Mos delivers a powerful and inspiring lecture on resilience, leadership, and coping with setbacks—based on his own unique political and personal experiences.
After a dramatic fall from grace as a city councilmember, in the midst of a highly publicized and ultimately unfounded corruption case, De Mos found himself back in the thick of political turmoil. It was a turbulent period during which he came under public fire and lost his position. Where many would have given up, he kept fighting.
He candidly described this period in his book *My Story*, in which he illustrates what it means to remain under extreme pressure, to lose trust, and to regain
it.
With an unprecedented comeback and a rock-solid campaign, he then led Hart voor Den Haag to a historic election victory of 16 seats—by far the city’s largest party and well ahead of the competition.
After intensive coalition negotiations, De Mos also returned to the city government. Since July 16, 2026, he has served as alderman for Economy, International Affairs, and the National Southwest Program, as well as first deputy mayor of The Hague. This marked a new chapter in his political comeback: from resignation and years of litigation to acquittal, an election victory, and a return to city government.
The media had already identified him as the clear favorite beforehand, and afterward he was praised for his strong campaign and decisive victory. His approach—visible in the neighborhoods, in direct contact with residents, and strategically sharp—was widely recognized as effective and distinctive.
It’s no coincidence that De Mos is seen as a true campaigner: someone who knows how to bounce back from setbacks and how to build and capitalize on momentum.
In this lecture, he takes the audience on a journey through his story: from a deep crisis to a powerful comeback and a return to public office.
Topics covered:
• dealing with severe setbacks and public pressure/framing
• leadership in times of crisis
• losing and regaining trust
• mental resilience and perseverance
• building a winning strategy
• motivating and uniting people
The lecture is suitable for organizations, entrepreneurs, associations, and political or civic gatherings where themes such as perseverance, motivation, and leadership are central.
De Mos speaks openly, energetically, and without beating around the bush. Depending on the audience, the talk can be tailored to be more inspirational or, conversely, more strategic and focused on political content.
Outcome for the audience:
An energetic gathering full of relatable moments, concrete lessons, The Hague-style humor, and motivation to come back stronger—both personally and professionally.
Also available as a special combination.
Richard de Mos can also be booked in combination with former professional soccer player Tom Beugelsdijk or top attorney Peter Plasman. These two unique combinations bring together perspectives from different worlds to discuss performing under pressure, dealing with setbacks, struggle, perseverance, and resilience.

What a great evening! From the moment we arrived, there was a wonderful atmosphere. In a lovely setting, Richard and Tom talked about their careers with a touch of humor, led by host Coen. The photos and videos were a fun addition and provided some variety. The evening was a perfect match between The Hague and Middenmeer—we’re still savoring the memories!

It was quite a challenge for us: Hagenezen from the "Wild West" in quiet Bolsward. But they are really great people who were really there from the first second, no smooth talkers, just themselves, which we as Frisians can appreciate. Great stories, they involve the audience and even with a 2 hour drive ahead of them they stay for a while and have a chat. In short: highly recommended!
