"Thank you for coming, Margriet. It's impressive to see the road you took to get where you are today. Inspiring talk that we at Freo will think back on regularly."

The first time I attended a presentation by Margriet, I was moved to tears by the sincerity and power of her story. Margriet's story makes you rethink the choices in your own life. In case you are at a point full of doubt about the routes you want to take in your (working) life, you must have been to a lecture by Margriet first anyway.

Margriet gave a speach at the Veer Foundation's Presymposium in Groningen. This Presymposium took place in the inner garden of restaurant El Txoko in Groningen. The VeerStichting is a student organisation that organises a large two-day symposium every year in the Pieterskerk in Leiden. Students and adults participate, and to bring the big symposium to the attention of students, we organise smaller symposiums for students throughout the country. At the Presymposium in Groningen, Margriet provided a very good, but above all inspiring lecture. Around the theme, Unlimited Identity, she told how tough it is as a top athlete to be forced to quit your passion and how difficult it is when your identity is suddenly lost. How do you deal with it when your dream falls apart? And how can you turn something negative into something positive and how can you make bad news work to your advantage? She did this in a very enthusiastic way and also made sure the audience was captivated and could somehow identify with her story. Margriet spoke clearly and calmly and managed to effortlessly convey the essence of her story to the audience. Moreover, she knows how to convey her story in a very enthusiastic way that made it extra easy to listen to her. It can be said that Margriet is a born speaker.

I first saw Margriet speak at TEDx Groningen 2013. She impressed with her disarming presentation and the vulnerability she dared to exude. Everything Brené Brown knows about the power of vulnerability was reflected in Margriet's presentation. At the same time, she knows how to tackle things, as befits a top athlete, and she knows how to communicate the focus and willpower required to do so. This was evident a year and a half later, when I had the opportunity to experience her again. Margriet is probably a nice young girl in the eyes of many, but she has a story from which a lifetime of wisdom has emerged.
