John Kuiper and Martien Tijburg are the founders, driving forces, inspirators and solid base of the nationally known swing folk group UNICORN which performs many styles of music (Irish, Blue Grass, Yiddish, shanties etc). John also performs some of the solo songs in UNICORN. Martien and John are not afraid, in addition to their great love of music the band UNICORN, also occasionally a project with the two of them to take hand. For example, they have provided the music for the dancers' collective "Vrouwen van Toen" within the framework of the Hoorns V.O.C. year ; they have provided the supporting act for the play "de Vliegende Hollander" on the VOC ship the Duyfken and in 2003 they provided

They are also the regular musical accompanists of the sea choir the Compagniezangers. This characterizes the versatility of these two musicians.
They will play a mix of the (Irish) music that they play at UNICORN supplemented with (sailor) music from the various projects mentioned and also Dutch songs especially aimed at elderly / nursing homes.
The humorous announcements of John and the enthousiastic attitude of these musicians increase the pleasure of the public even more

The beautiful ballad 'Ride on' with a starring role for singer Jolanda Traarbach. Beautiful flawless performance brought with feeling and also 'High Germany' had a strong turn singing

With a catchy performance by folk band Unicorn, the 20th anniversary of the Sunday afternoon stage Haarlemmermeer was celebrated. With song and dance in Irish style, the large number of attendees enjoyed themselves immensely.

Together they have a fascinating and extensive repertoire. They are good at Celtic music, klezmer, jigs, Dutch/Flemish folk music, dance tunes and sing-alongs

The well-known North Holland folk band Unicom opened the concert with a heartwarming guest performance. Unicom created atmosphere with Irish folk music through the full sound of John Kuiper's guitar. Martine Nijenhuis' violin playing was virtuoso, as was the clear, flawless voice of singer Jolanda Ttaarbach. Accordionist Martien Tijlburg provided the finishing touch

Before I was already hooked on the fresh folk sound of the four of them, now I'm completely addicted to this group of six. The addition of Martine and Betty brings even more variety to their repertoire. It's wonderful how Betty and Jolanda sing the song 'Cruel sister' together and I got goose bumps when Betty sang 'Motherland'.

Earlier I compared Unicorn with the cream on a glass of Irish coffee, I can now say that it certainly doesn't stop at one glass. With or without coffee, this tastes like whisky from the best distillers. It's amazing to hear how this Dutch set can match not only the atmosphere, but also the quality of a seasoned band from Ireland

The repertoire is very extensive: a mix of Celtic (Irish, Scottish) Dutch/Flemish, Yiddish fiddle, Canadian, Blue Grass, but also Dutch and English shanties and gypsy songs.

Unicorn's second set was the icing on my Irish Coffee. Beautifully sung ballads - with tears rolling down them - alternated with exciting dance music. Martine Nijenhuis' Irish fiddle seemed almost to ignite at times. Rarely have I heard a solo rendition of the song 'Dueling Violins' in which every violin duelling would be superfluous. It was great! But I must not underestimate the quality of the other members of the band. A band that effortlessly remains fascinating throughout the entire evening

Unicorn, which plays mainly Irish and Celtic folk music, klezmer and blue grass, almost had the audience on their feet and received standing ovations

In the Green Church of Lambertschaag, music group Unicorn gave a full evening concert last Saturday. The church wasn't exactly full and that was a pity, because Unicorn deserves better. In 'Star of the Country Down' Unicorn played a fresh four beat. Nice vocals and ditto transmission

Last Friday evening there was a smashing performance in the Miente by the band Unicorn from North Holland. The repertoire they brought consisted mainly of Irish and Scottish music. Thanks to the experience, the musical capacities and the contagious enthusiasm of the musicians, this concert was a special event. The varied programme had many highlights.

After the last song, the artists received a standing ovation as a token of appreciation token of appreciation. Last Saturday the concert of Swing-folkband Unicorn with dancegroup Kyra took place in the sold-out Bonisfacius church: an atmospheric event with Irish pub music, jigs and real Riverdance acts

It's Unicorn, they can and do anything. The audience stomps, claps, sings and spontaneously dances along. And they always seem to play to a sold-out crowd. A performance by them together grabs you from start to finish, an experience
