(Roel) VanVelzen can be heard for the first time in 2006 with his debut single 'Baby Get Higher'. The
pianist/singer makes a lightning start with performances in DWDD and as in March 2007 his
debut album comes out, it's at the top of the charts. Now - three albums, twenty singles, various awards
(including a Golden Harp), six club and theatre tours and hundreds of performances away - isn't he
more like radio, television, and festival stages.

Together with his band he guarantees a flaming live show. Not only before, but above all
with his audience he shares his musical energy. In 2018, for example, he could be seen at Vrienden van Amstel, in
the Holland Heineken house and he played with Leo Blokhuis forty theatre performances about their
shared love for Queen.

After that Roel consciously took a step back; a time-out of TV performances and composing.
There was so much playing at the same time. My father had passed away, and not much later Marloes and I ended up a
relationship crisis. When it comes to writing songs, I was completely locked up for a while. It wasn't until we went into therapy, and
we went to talk to someone about our relationship, I could write about it. It worked
therapeutically, I could write off the sad and confusing time.

After I had written about ten heavy songs I thought: that's it, that's it. Now I feel like
to make something with a beat! A complete new approach for me, not to use a piano or
start the guitar. It felt like the sun was breaking through, like a huge liberation. There was still somewhere
an old synthesizer, and an hour later, Opposite Lover was finished'.

Opposite Lover sounds different from everything VanVelzen has released so far, and that comes as both
through the composition as well as the production. Roel wrote the song with music friends Peter Kvint
(a.o. wrote Love Song and produced Andreas Johnson) and Martijn Konijnenburg (wrote Leaf's
'Wonder Woman' and Kygo's 'Firestone'). The production was done by Christian 'Krada' Kalla, who
previously worked with Drake, Alicia Keys and Kendrick Lamar
