Born March 8th 1966 in Eindhoven. When I was 7 years old I already wanted to play flamenco, but there was nobody who could teach me this art. My father taught me some Spanish melodies and chords. When I was 8 he sent me to lessons with a multi-instrumentalist. He could do a bit of everything, so a year later he sent me to the music school. Still no flamenco, but a gateway to the conservatory. At the music school my teacher did not understand my flamenco passion very well. Classical music was broader, he said, and besides I should have started at a younger age. I gave up my ambitions, and threw myself with heart and soul and success into the classical repertoire. In the end I graduated from the conservatory in 1989 as one of the best students.

During the final year of my classical guitar studies I started to study flamenco as an autodidact. I also started to compose in that style. After my final exams I had achieved a certain base, and I went to live in Seville for a year ('89-'90). I played with everyone who could sing a little, with gypsies and "citizens". That period was and is essential for my further development.

Composing and improvising are essential for me. In May 2011 I played in the Netherlands with the top dance duo Antonio de Verónica/Saray Cortés from Malaga, with some of their musicians. This performance was exclusive for the 15th International Gipsy Festival in Tilburg.

I played with Paul van Kemenade (sax) from 1992 till 2007. He played an important role on my debut album "Live at Paradox". In recent years Paul and I played together again sporadically, which again was very pleasing. This resulted in November 2017 in a very successful tour in Russia , where we were guests as a duo at the touring International Festival Jazz Province of the Russian pianist-band leader-organizer Leonid Vintskevich.

From 2008 on I occasionally played with Eric Vloeimans (trumpet), who is also an international jazz great. Just like with Paul, these are concerts with music I composed myself. Concert recordings can be found on my official Facebook page "Maurice Leenaars Guitarra Flamenca".

My solo-cd EL CALOR (the heat), was released in 2010. This is the third album to my name. It was recorded in Tilburg and Barcelona. In Barcelona it came about thanks to the help of Juan Estrada, agent of the world-famous flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía. My fourth album PRELUDIO will be released in 2021, and just like the previous album, can be streamed via Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and more.
