Henk Poort is known to some as a musical actor, to others as an opera singer. One thing is certain: few in the world make the switch from musical song to opera aria with such ease. Less well known is that Henk Poort is also a fascinating storyteller. Book Henk Poort now via Showbird!
In addition to his successes in the opera world, Henk Poort has also made a name for himself on the musical scene. He played the role of Jean Valjean in the Dutch production of "Les Misérables," a role that earned him much praise and popularity. His portrayal of this iconic role continues to be hailed as one of the best in the history of the production. Henk Poort's other notable musical roles include that of Tevje in "Anatevka" (Fiddler on the Roof) and the title role in "The Phantom of the Opera."
In I am my song, he sings songs from his extensive repertoire (musical, operetta, opera and pop) and puts himself in the shoes of colorful individuals from his
past.
He tells of life in the Jordaan, where the operas were loudly sung along, introduces us to the Jordanian "omes" who offered unsolicited life lessons, and grants the audience a look behind the scenes of the world of musical and opera. Sit back and enjoy his life's song!
Biography
The baritone Henk Poort (1956) began his musical and vocal training at the Sweelinck Conservatory in his native Amsterdam.
Already during his studies he drew attention to himself by winning the first Cristina Deutekom Concours.
After his final exams in 1988, he put himself under the care of Italian coach Ettore Campogagliani and Dutch pedagogue Margreet Honig.
Henk Poort sang at various opera houses in Europe and built a broad repertoire. This began with engagements in Ulm and Krefeld where he sang his first Verdi roles: Macbeth, Rigoletto, Nabucco and Germont (Traviata). But also Escamillo ("Carmen"), André Thorel (Massenet's "Thérèse") and the title roles in "Eugen Onegin" and "Guillaume Tell.
As a guest Henk Poort was subsequently engaged by, among others, De Nederlandse Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Hessische Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, the Nationale Reisopera, the VARA (Opera matinee in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw) and the Opera of Bern.
'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg', Sharpless in 'Madame Butterfly', Luna in 'Il Trovatore', Renato in 'Un Ballo in Maschera' and Gérard in 'Andrea Chenier' he added to his repertoire there.
In the Oratorio and Vocal-Symphonic sector, one sees Henk Poort's name regularly posted in Brahms' and Fauré's Requiem, Haydn's 'Die Schöpfung' and Orff's 'Carmina Burana'.
As Jean Valjean in 'Les Misérables' and in the title role in 'The Phantom of the Opera,' Henk Poort gained great fame among a wide audience. After his portrayal of the milkman Tevje in 'Anatevka,' he could have followed up on numerous invitations from directors such as Harold Prince and producers such as Cameron Mackintosch for leading roles in musicals in various European capitals. However, the baritone wanted to continue alternating his roles in musicals with operatic roles and continue working with conductors such as Edo de Waart, Lawrence Renes, Yakov Kreitzberg, Gabriele Bellini, Miguel-Angel Gomez Martinez and Alexander Rahbari.
Henk Poort is regularly in demand as an actor. For example, he played in several television series (including "Russians") and the feature film "Night Ride" (2006) and Kicks(2006).
