This workshop unravels the myth of multitasking. Research shows that there is no such thing as multitasking. Actually, we switch from task to task all the time. We call this switch-tasking. And you pay a hefty price for switch-tasking. Through interactive exercises, participants become aware of the costs of switch-tasking:
-40% less productive
-3-4 times more errors
-time-consuming
-stress increasing
-half attention to your relationship (work and private)
-energy guzzling.
-it inhibits creativity and innovative capacity.
In collaboration with scientists from the UvA, the VU and the UU, Wouter Hesseling has been researching multitasking and hyperconnectivity (being constantly online) for years. In an inspired manner, Wouter talks about the price you pay for multitasking
(switch-tasking). Soon even the most skeptical listener is hanging on his every word.
An introduction and some interactive exercises are followed by a short powerful show with more than ten spinning plates. After this, the participants get to work themselves. While they get to spin real breakable plates on steel pins, they have to find the focus to get several spoons into different glasses in one motion. People become aware of what switch-tasking does to them and can take advantage of it later, at work but also privately.
The best thing would be to monotask (finish something before you start something new), but in this world it is almost demanded of you to multitask. During the workshop and during the evaluation, participants are given tips on how, if they do switch-task, they can do this as efficiently as possible.
Results:
During this workshop 'Multitasking does not exist' (45- 120 minutes) the participants learn the difference between multitasking, switchtasking and monotasking and experience what it does to them.
This will ultimately provide participants with a structured way of working, better choices in their approach and more peace of mind. This new way of working will result in higher efficiency (net working time is greater), more productivity (more focus), maximum customer focus (the customer gets full attention) and less work pressure.

Wouter hosted a great energetic, interactive and educational workshop for our department (~60 people). Led by Wouter, we were introduced to the "inconveniences" of Multitasking in a fresh and fun way. Wouter does this in a pleasant way, communication and preparation were very good. Afterwards we had many nice and positive reactions from the participants!

Full of energy, Wouter took employees of the municipality into the world of multitasking. Catchy examples, sharp content and very interactive, he gave insight into how our brain works. Very instructive and because we got to work ourselves with glasses, spoons and spinning plates it became a valuable experience. Thank you Wouter for how you unraveled the myth.

I have already experienced Wouter's workshop twice and am impressed by the enthusiastic way in which Wouter approaches the group and the playful and clear way in which he brings multitasking into the limelight. I can confirm that the efficiency increases significantly when you stop switchtasking. In short, a good workshop in these hectic times.
