Drones: past, present and future

Drones: more and more you read about them in news reports and more and more you see beautiful drone images on TV. And many sectors are now using drones, including agriculture, inspection, security. But where did the drone actually come from? What is currently possible? Should we be concerned about our privacy and airspace safety, or is it not all that bad? What developments can we expect in the coming years?

Even now, when we think of drones, we picture those large military aircraft carrying out bombing raids in distant countries, or, closer to home, those buzzing little helicopters that take beautiful photos and videos from the air. But drones are constantly evolving and getting smaller and smaller. Students at Eindhoven University of Technology are working on a flying robot butler. And there are already scientists who have developed a drone the size of a coin. These can even be equipped with miniature cameras. Such drones can be used, for example, to search for victims in a burning house, but also to spy on people. What possibilities do drones offer today, and how have they actually evolved? How are drones currently being used? What does the rise of drones mean for our privacy? What is the current regulatory landscape for drones, and what developments can we expect in the coming years?
