A very special breeze is blowing through this building tonight.
A breeze that smells of peppernuts, of fresh stroopwafels, of the salty air of Spain, and of the excitement of thousands of children who’ve been counting down the days for weeks.
Because tonight…
we have a visitor.
Someone with a long white beard, a red miter, and a staff who has been walking across the rooftops of the Netherlands for centuries.
Someone who, year after year, opens the big books, writes down the names, and decides who has been good… and who might need to be a little more careful.
But he never comes alone.
By his side stands his faithful helper.
The one who carries the sacks, tosses the treats, sorts the presents, and always has a generous smile—even when he’s just crawled down the chimney.
The one who takes the children by the hand and whispers, “Say it out loud—then St. Nicholas will hear you better!”
And who, when the tension gets too much, slips a peppernut into your hand so you dare to breathe again.
They’ve been traveling together.
Across the sea, through the air, past the rooftops of the whole of the Netherlands.
They looked at the little shoes that were neatly lined up.
They listened to the songs you sang.
And they decided:
this is where they need to be tonight.

Because the man with the beard and the red cloak is at the door.
And his faithful helper, Piet, is ready to scatter the first peppernuts.
