About 1 in 5 older adults (20%) in the Netherlands is bullied. According to researchers, this percentage is often even higher in care centers and nursing homes, with figures from staff suggesting that up to 2 in 5 older adults (40%) experience it.
During this lecture, Danny will take an active role in sharing his findings with the audience. What can you do as an older adult if this happens to you?

About 1 in 5 older adults (20%) in the Netherlands is bullied. According to researchers, this percentage is often even higher in care centers and nursing homes, with figures from staff suggesting that up to 2 in 5 older adults (40%) experience it.

A lecture on bullying among older adults focuses on raising awareness, the specific dynamics (often referred to as “relational aggression”), and breaking the taboo. Topics that should be covered in such a lecture include:
• What is bullying among older adults?: Define forms such as exclusion, gossiping, ignoring, hiding belongings, or belittling. Distinguish between teasing and systematic bullying.

• Causes and triggers: Discuss why older adults bully one another. Consider boredom, fear of losing control or autonomy, peer pressure in care facilities, and competition for the best spot in the common area.

• The impact on the victim: Provide insight into the consequences, such as loneliness, depression, anxiety, and physical symptoms.

• The role of bystanders and caregivers: Explain how group dynamics work. What roles do supporters, followers, and outsiders play? And how can unconscious behavior by staff (such as unintentionally favoring one person) contribute to tensions?

• Guidelines and prevention: What actions are needed to create a socially safe environment? Discuss the benefits of a bullying protocol (such as the one developed by the Nationaal Ouderenfonds), appointing a confidential advisor, and using restorative approaches
