The Steel Band is a dance orchestra in Big Band line-up supplemented by 2 vocalists and plays the dance music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Glenn Miller and the famous Dutch orchestra The Ramblers. However, swinging Dutch arrangements of newer music are also on the orchestra's repertoire.
The name comes from the staff association De Stalen Band, which was founded in the 1930s at the Leiden-based metal construction company N.V. Hollandsche Constructie Werkplaatsen (HCW).
The first performance was on Feb. 13, 1941, the official founding date of the orchestra. The photo of this first performance shows that the orchestra, proudly displayed in tuxedo, considered making music a serious business.
