Martijn van den Assem is a professor of Finance at the Free University. His main focus is on the choices and judgments we make as humans. His knowledge and expertise is therefore actually at the interface of (behavioral) economics, finance and psychology.
During his lecture he shows which predictable mistakes people make when making financial choices, for example in their role as manager, investor, homebuyer, or consumer. He does this using psychological insights and scientific research. His lecture combines scientific depth, examples, entertainment, and interaction.
For his own research, he uses television game shows, such as the popular Dutch Miljoenenjacht, among others. Three articles from that line of research he co-wrote with American Nobel Prize winner Richard Thaler (economics, 2017).
He has
won several teaching awards, and is an accomplished speaker.
