Song program about singer Willy Derby (1886-1944) for which Coba, Lichtekooi der Zangkunst together with her Cobets put the best and most beautiful songs from Derby's repertoire into a new format.
Striking detail: many of Derby's songs are surprisingly current again!
Between songs, Coba tells tasteful and painful anecdotes from the extraordinary life of this great Dutch artist of a hundred years ago.

Willy Derby was the most popular folk artist of the Interwar period, the period between two wars. Today, Derby is still beloved and his records are still played by his fans, although fewer and fewer are.
Willy Derby is best known as a Smartlappenzanger, but he sang so much more. And that's what Coba likes to hear.

Coba, a former innkeeper from downtown The Hague, loves songs that tell a story and dived into Derby's history. She put together a cheerful song program that includes not only his greatest hits but also funny songs from his younger years about new inventions, distant lands and the changing spirit of the times.

Derby, who grew from poor street boy to an artist selling millions of records, was a fine distraction and enormous comfort to many during the crisis years and wartime with his songs of life. People recognized the sorrow and suffering he sang about and took pleasure in all the "new-fangled antics and fads" of the new generation.
Derby was the very first artist in Holland to sing 'Droomland', a song of American origin for which he had a translation made and he later became an inspiration for singers such as Dorus, Willy Alberti and Andre Hazes sr.
Other well-known songs of his were "Hello Bandoeng," "Two Eyes So Blue," "Black Gypsy" and "The Fiere Schooiershart.
Derby had also been a singing sailor who sang English songs and he was Lou Bandy's brother, but you will surely never forget that after this Coba show!
