We have arrived in an era where we can decipher the code of life and rationally design artificial living systems with new properties that do not occur in nature.
With a newer phase of biotechnology, called synthetic biology, we can code cells much like computers and turn them into diesel producing factories, make them clean pollutants from the environment or let them search for cancer cells.
Regardless of many technical en social challenges that still exist today, an increasing number of enterprises are applying these synthetic biology and the market is estimated to reach $38.7 billion by 2020.
One thing is clear: synthetic biology has a great potential and is expected to dominate the next industrial revolution.

Nadine Bongaerts is
afgestudeerd in de biotechnologie aan de Technische Universiteit Delft en heeft zich op jonge leeftijd tot een connector tussen wetenschap, maatschappij en bedrijfsleven. Tijdens haar studie richtte ze wetenschapscommunicatie bureau ScienceMatters op om wetenschappers en universiteiten te ondersteunen bij het communiceren van onderzoek.
Momenteel promoveert zij in de Synthetische Biologie aan het Nationaal Instituut voor Gezondheid en Medisch Onderzoek (INSERM) in Parijs. Hier werkt zij aan de ontwikkeling van nieuwe antibiotica tegen tuberculose. Daarnaast is zij de Vice-President van de internationale non-profit organisatie Hello Tomorrow dat wereldwijd wetenschappers, ondernemers en investeerders met elkaar verbindt om baanbrekende technologieën uit de laboratoria naar de markt te brengen.
Ze wordt regelmatig geïnterviewd / gevraagd om te spreken over de mogelijkheden van synthetische biologie (een relatief nieuwe tak van wetenschap die het mogelijk maakt om organismen te ontwerpen), tech startups en wetenschapscommunicatie. Ze kan daarnaast ook de rol van dagvoorzitter op zich nemen, zeker wanneer uw bijeenkomst gerelateerd is aan wetenschap, technologie en innovatie.
