In the lecture “From Concrete to Savannah” Jordi Woerts takes the audience on his personal journey from the hustle and bustle of Rotterdam to the wilderness of South Africa. After his studies and an office job as a social media manager, Jordi decided to pursue his dreams as a safari guide in Africa. What started as a volunteer trip in Kruger National Park became an adventure full of challenges and life lessons.
Jordi shares stories about his time as a guide, from guiding guests between wild animals to learning to read tracks with his tracker Phineas. He tells with humor and excitement about dangerous encounters with animals, such as a young cobra and a black rhino. Photography played an important
role in his adventure: Jordi combined his love for wildlife with capturing special moments, which adds power to his stories.
He also discusses the obstacles he faced as a foreigner, such as bureaucracy and corruption. His story is not only about nature, but also about the value of cooperation, both with local communities and with colleagues. Jordi offers an inspiring look at perseverance, conservation and the beauty of Africa, while highlighting the importance of protecting our natural world.
