Dieter van der Westen combines groovy American folk songs with slow Tom Waits-like ballads and folk-soul-songs. He plays self-written work and a folk traditional every now and then. Dieter van der Westen has also been working with the Dutch famous artists such as, BLØF, The Lau, Frank Boeijen and the Grammy winning Metropole Orchestra.

As a child, Dieter listened to the music of Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young played by his three older brothers in his hometown of Tilburg. Growing up, he was also inspired by the world music of Manu Chao and Khaled that he heard in the neighborhood where he lived. In his own music, he combines this Americana, Folk and World music. After the well-received debut album Old Oak Tree (2016) and the band album Me and You (2018), Dieter van der Westen has developed into a solid, versatile Americana, folk and alt-country act in the Dutch and Flemish live scene. During the corona period, Dieter and his brother, well-known Dutch double bassist , recorded the acoustic duo album The Sun Will Rise Again and their new band album Honesty of the Hopeful, which they presented in Paradiso Amsterdam in 2022.

In his solo work, Dieter is known for his deep voice with a raw edge and melodic folk soul songs that are often compared to the work of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Mark Knopfler. In the Netherlands, he worked with artists such as Blof, The Lau, Paul de Leeuw, Gerard van Maasakkers and Frank Boeijen. He played double bill concerts with well-known country artists such as Sam Outlaw and Charley Crockett. In 2024 he performed as a support act for the world famous band Calexico in Caprera Bloemendaal.
