As part of the social studies subject in March 2019, I have invited Mikel Dees as a guest speaker for the topic Rule of Law. With his story about his personal life, Mikel Dees knows how to encourage children to think about their role in society. His pedagogy is excellent. He gives children a compass by which they will come to more fruitful choices at their important intersections than his own. Children will not always remember exactly what you tell them, but they will always remember the impression and how they were treated. Of this he is aware and this is what he knows how to realize positively and he does this with a loving heart. A heart that wants to help. At the same time, he exudes a natural authority. For he knows that his story can serve as a life lesson for young children, and can effortlessly win over the "most difficult" classes. I therefore warmly recommend his guest lectures to schools for subjects with the function of citizenship education

For several years now I have invited Mikel Dees to come and tell about his life in my 3Mavo classes as part of the social studies subject. And, as an illustration, every year the new students of 3Mavo ask at the beginning of the year "if that guy is coming to tell the story again." This shows that Mikel's guest lectures now have a place within the subject and trickle down to other layers of learning. And this, of course, is not without reason. Mikel shows how seemingly small choices can lead to very unpleasant consequences. He also shows how you are not born a criminal, but through all kinds of circumstances 'roll into' something. He combines all this with a warm and sincere charisma, letting the students share amply in his life and sharing the life lessons drawn from it with them in an almost spiritual way. Mikel tells a fierce, and at times sad, story. Yet he manages to leave the students with a message of hope and positivity, and encouragement to do the right thing in their lives. Highly recommended!

Mikel gave a very strong education at the bajesdag Veenhuizen Saturday, June 15. Since I have always had a fascination with this kind of thing, I attended this one as well. That fascination is not about the acts that may have been committed but how they came about. How does the human brain work, how does it communicate with your body and what drives you to perform certain actions? Through Mikel, I was able to get answers to all the questions, although of course it is different for everyone. His story resonated with me tremendously. And where I am normally very tough, his words hit me like a comet hitting!
