Before becoming a Member of Parliament in 2010, he was a researcher and lecturer at Tilburg University and a city council member in Breda. He also had his own business in legal advice and IT support for small entrepreneurs.

In the Rutte II cabinet, Klaas was State Secretary for Security and Justice from 2015 to 2017 and briefly Minister of Defense. Klaas Dijkhoff was the VVD parliamentary group chairman in the House of Representatives from October 2017 to March 2021.
