Tzigane is a student gypsy chapel from Utrecht and plays mainly Hungarian gypsy music, but also some tangos, Gipsy Swing and Romanian gypsy music. The current line-up consists of three violinists, a cymbalist, a bassist, a pianist and a guitarist.
Tzigane has existed since 1910, initially as a Viennese string band but since the 1930s as a gypsy chapel. Tzigane consists entirely of students at the University of Utrecht. A member of our chapel who is about to graduate chooses a new freshman to train as a replacement. Thus it is that Tzigane has existed for over 110 years, but is still alive and kicking!
Tzigane regularly travels to Budapest to learn the intricacies of gypsy music from the Hungarian masters. In recent years, lessons have been taken with Puka Karoly, Lajos Sarkozy, Lajos Sarkozy Jr., Julius Csik, Elemér Duka and Miklos Lakatos.

Tzigane exceeded my expectations. The music sounded fantastic (I've heard more than average live bands in Hungary in the past), there was a lot of dancing on it, the members radiated enthusiasm, nicely dressed, neatly kept the appointment. Highly recommended.
