Tzigane is a student gypsy chapel from Utrecht and plays mainly Hungarian gypsy music, but also some tangos, Gipsy Swing and Romanian gypsy music. The current line-up consists of a violinist, cymbalist, bass player, viola player, cellist and guitarist.
Tzigane exists since 1910, at first as a Viennese string band but since the 30's as a gypsy band. Tzigane consists entirely of students at the University of Utrecht. A member of our chapel who is about to graduate chooses a new first year student to train as his replacement. So it is possible that Tzigane exists for 110 years, but is still alive and kicking!
Tzigane regularly goes to Budapest to learn the intricacies of gypsy music from the Hungarian masters. In recent years lessons have been followed by Puka Karoly, Lajos Sarkozy jr., Julius Csik, Elemér Duka and Miklos Lakatos.

Tzigane exceeded my expectations. The music sounded fantastic (I've heard more than average live bands in Hungary in the past), there was a lot of dancing on it, the members radiated enthusiasm, nicely dressed, neatly kept the appointment. Highly recommended.
