In 1979 my childhood friend Ton Winkelman and I started the marketing and public relations consultancy Winkelman en Van Hessen B.V. For more than 30 years we have been a leading communications consultancy based in The Hague. In 2007 we were voted Europe's best employer in the communications sector, in 2011 we won the 'Golden Giraffe'

In 2008 I started the 'Big Improvement Day' out of the need to highlight and strengthen positive developments in the Netherlands. For ten years now, the top of the Dutch government and the business community have come together on the third Tuesday of January to give 'Holland B.V.' a boost.
