You come sit at the table with the guy with his typewriter. After a short conversation he starts tapping and a moment later he reads the personal poem to you. Then: a smile, a tear, a shudder...

The Poetry Escribano is: speed poet David Mulder. For ten years he has been writing poems for men and women who come to his table.

The Poetry Escribano is not flat entertainment. My visitors get an experience they won't soon forget. In all these years, I have become adept at quickly figuring out what is important in my guest's life. Thus an intimate conversation ensues, amidst the busy festivities around us. A moment of stillness, before plunging back into the festivities.

Every person has their own story, every person has a fascinating emotional life. And when my guest gives me the confidence to do something with that - to return that story in poetic terms - something special happens. Because even though it is his own story, he is surprised and sometimes shocked when he gets it back in poetic form. That's because poetry makes you look at your own life with different eyes. It provides an unexpected angle, making your own story as new.

It's not just my immediate guests who benefit from my act. The look of the scene, with the antique typewriter (and its nostalgic sound) adds to the atmosphere at the event. The sight of two people talking to each other so intently makes one curious: "What's going on over there? Is it a consultation? A consultation?' And since the people who receive a poem from me naturally have their friends read it, the reach of each text quickly widens.
