The Monkey King was born from a magical stone formed from the primary forces of chaos. He was revered in the clan of monkeys as the King, having found a new home for them in a cave behind a waterfall. The Monkey King soon realized that despite his position as king, he was still a mortal, and thus not much more powerful than the other monkeys. Therefore, he decided to go on a journey to discover the secret of immortality. During his journey, he learned magical skills, which he could use to fight. Eventually, he became arrogant and hoped to gain god status through his powers. The Jade Emperor of Heaven gave him a position in the heavens, hoping to control him. The Monkey King realized that this was a low position and began a rebellion against heaven. The Jade Emperor enlisted the help of Gautama Buddha. The latter managed to defeat the Monkey King by trickery and imprison him under a mountain for 500 years.

500 years later, the Monkey King was released after promising to help the monk Xuánzàng during his pilgrimage to India. At the end, when Xuánzàng completed his task, the Monkey King, like Xuánzàng, was given the status of Buddha.
