THE TRIO consists of twins Suus and Gijs and their father Dries:
GIJS DE MAEYER °June 21, 2003 – saxophones (alto, tenor, …), clarinet, flute, …
Gijs earned his Master’s degree in Music (Jazz) in June 2026 after studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (KCB), the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG—Austria), and the Ghent Conservatory (KASK). There, he studied under renowned musicians such as Bart Defoort, Julian Argüelles, Heinrich von Kalnein, Jeroen Van Herzeele, Bruno Vansina, Marjan Van Rompay, Maarten Van De Splenter, …
Gijs plays in various bands,
projects, and big bands, such as Dixie 6, Prekouski, Dubadours, the VRT Big Band, and the Royal Rupelzonen Wind Band, among others.
SUUS DE MAEYER, born June 21, 2003 – Drums
As a child, Suus asked St. Nicholas for a “recorder with a Baroque bore.” He, too, was at the top of his class in music theory. Before he was allowed to play the drums, he learned from Walter De Kunst—the old-fashioned way—how to hold drumsticks. A solid foundation. Afterward, he had numerous inspiring percussion teachers at the Academy of Boom.
Just like his twin brother, Suus participated in music camps, including at De Singel in Antwerp and at Jazz We Can. Suus plays and has played in numerous ad-hoc ensembles.
During his final years at the Academie van Boom, he pursued a specialization track: advanced percussion studies with Jonathan Beyers (including the Flanders Symphony Orchestra), jazz drums with Tijl Piryns, advanced music theory with Mitchel Wolput, and composition with Gijs’s first saxophone teacher, Maarten De Splenter. There, at the age of 17, he wrote his first composition for concert band: *About A River*. A digital version of this work received rave reviews from the jury of “the European Music Festival for Young People” in Pelt. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its world premiere did not take place until November 5, 2021. It was performed by the Royal Rupelzonen Wind Band, where Suus also plays percussion.
Suus’s versatility is fully evident in his band, Rehash. With this punk band, he played at venues including the AB in Brussels in 2024 and made it to the semifinals of Humo’s Rock Rally. This, combined with his classical music and jazz, completes the full musical spectrum.
In May 2021, he passed the conservatory’s entrance exams, and a month later, he graduated from SJI (mathematics and sciences).
In June 2024, Suus earned his “Bachelor of Music” degree with high honors from the KASK Conservatory in Ghent. There, he studied jazz drumming under Toon Van Dionant, among others.
During that time, he also passed the entrance exams for the Erasmus Master’s program at Musikene in San Sebastián (Spain). There, he will begin his Master’s program from September 2024 through February 2025. Among others, he will be taught by Jo Krause.
Dries De Maeyer - born August 9, 1970 - Bass Guitar
Dries hails from the original Mortsel band “De Plakband.” There he played alongside David Bovée, Tom Theuns, Mark Willems (of dUES, among others), Wim De Wilde (of Noordkaap, among others), Wim Helsen, and many others...
After some wanderings through the Ghent blues scene (including “Blues on the Road”) and the folk scene (including “Almost Folk”), he ended up in a remote part of France. The amplified bass riffs took a back seat. Back in Belgium, he played with numerous casual groups and cover bands (including Whispering Wind, The Dixi’s, and The Backyard Crashers). He is currently also active with Yapa3 and Decent Groove.
In terms of bass playing, he has fully converted to the 5-string, under the motto: “low notes have deep roots.”

As a former street puppeteer, I know that if you want to get viewers and listeners, the enthusiasm and the joy of partying should already be radiating from you. Level Chapeau has it all: youthful enthusiasm, speed, fun and temptation. And all this based on an excellent musical quality in each of the members. What more can an organiser expect from a festive event?

We had a beautiful garden party, enlivened with the cheerful, jazzy, atmospheric music of Niveau Chapeau. Their enthusiasm and contagious music encouraged us to dance Appointments tip top in order. At our request, the trio studied a 'request' number, which also worked out great! Highly recommended!

The performance of Level Chapeau was really Chapeau. An unbelievable band that brings the familiar tunes fantastic. The twin brothers and their father brought repertoire that everyone is watching. The enthusiasm of this trio is enormous and drags the audience into the swong of their rhythm. A must for everyone who is looking for a fantasy music evening. Great band to work with. Keep up the good work, gentlemen. A big thumbs up from our choir group Canteclaer Hoevenen.

Everyone enjoyed and there was good dancing, even though it was a Sunday afternoon lunch ! Super - a lot of nice comments received from our guests. Even so much fun that one of our guests asked Niveau Chapeau to join them this month. We will think of you as soon as we have something to celebrate! Top band! Thank you so much!
