GIJS DE MAEYER °21/06/2003 - Tenor and Alt Saxophone
Little Gijs' fingers only just fitted on the alto saxophone when he received his first lessons from Maarten De Splenter. Soon Maarten taught him, besides the classical works, the first improvisation techniques. In the solfège at the Academy of Boom, Gijs was an outstanding student.
The "International Saxfest" in Vienna became his first experience abroad. Gijs was only 11 years old. He had a taste for it
and followed several music camps such as Jazz We Can and played in numerous occasional ensembles.
As a 15-year-old he entered the competition "play it loud" of the vrt. (See among others the here.)
From 2018, Gijs combines classical alto saxophone with Maarten with jazz on tenor sax with Ruben Valle Elorriaga. Only in 2020-2021 Gijs chooses completely for jazz and goes to Marjan Van Rompay, who successfully prepares him for the conservatory entrance tests. In that school year, Gijs also graduates (Sint Rita College - mathematical sciences) and became Laureate in Lier.
In June 2024, Gijs receives the diploma "Bachelor of Music" with great distinction at the Conservatory of Ghent KASK. There he was taught by Bart Defoort, among others.
During this period he also passed the entrance exams for the Erasmus Master at the KUG in Graz (Austria) and the Consbo in Bologna (Italy). He finally chose Graz and will study there from September 2024 to February 2025.
Gijs is a regular member of the contemporary dixieland group Dixie 6.
He also plays regularly with big bands, such as Boom Big Band, Marc Godfroid's big band, the VRT big band and the Conservatory big band.
He also plays clarinet with the Koninklijke Harmonie Rupelzonen.
SUUS DE MAEYER °21/06/2003 - Drums
As a child, Suus asked Saint Nicholas for a "recorder with baroque bore". He, too, was primus at learning notes. Before he was allowed to hit a drum, he learned from Walter De Kunst in grandfatherly fashion how to hold drumsticks. A good foundation. After that, he had numerous inspiring percussion teachers at the Academy of Boom.
Like his twin brother, Suus participated in music camps, including at de Singel in Antwerp and at Jazz We Can. Suus plays and played in numerous occasional ensembles.
His last years at the Academy of Boom he followed a specialization track: deepening percussion with Jonathan Beyers (a.o. Symfonie Orkest Vlaanderen), jazz drum with Tijl Piryns, continued solfège with Mitchel Wolput and composition with Gijs' first saxophone teacher: Maarten De Splenter. There, at age 17, he wrote his first composition for concert band: About A River. This work, in a digital version, received rave reviews from the jury of "the European Music Festival for Young People" in Pelt. Due to the corona crisis, it could only have its world premiere on Nov. 5, 2021. It was performed by the Koninklijke Harmonie Rupelzonen where Suus also plays percussion.
Suus's versatility is fully evident with his band Rehash. With this punk band he played in 2024 at the AB in Brussels, among other places, and made it to the semi-finals of Humo's Rock Rally. This together with his classical music and jazz complete the full musical spectrum.
In May 2021 he passed the conservatory entrance exams and a month later graduated from SJI (mathematical sciences).
In June 2024, Suus obtained the diploma "Bachelor of Music" with great distinction at the conservatory of Ghent KASK. There he received jazz drumming from, among others, Toon Van Dionant.
During this period he also passed the entrance exams for the Erasmus Master at Musikene in San Sebastian (Spain). There he will study from September 2024 to February 2025.
In addition to percussion, Suus also plays piano, trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin , ...
Dries De Maeyer - °09/08/1970 - Bass guitar
Dries comes from the original Mortsel formation: "De Plakband". There he played together with a.o. David Bovée, Tom Theuns , Mark Willems (a.o. dUES), Wim De Wilde (a.o. Noordkaap), Wim Helsen and many others ...
After some wanderings along the Ghent blues (a.o. Blues on the Road) and folk world (a.o. Almost Folk), he ended up in an electricity poor part of France. The amplified bass drums went on the back burner. Back in Belgium he played with numerous occasional groups and cover bands (a.o. Whispering Wind, The Dixi's, The Backyard Crashers, Clean Shirt). Currently he is also active with Yapa3 and with Decent Groove.
In terms of bass playing, he has fully converted to the 5-string, under the motto: "low notes have deep grounds".

As a former street puppeteer, I know that if you want to get viewers and listeners, the enthusiasm and the joy of partying should already be radiating from you. Level Chapeau has it all: youthful enthusiasm, speed, fun and temptation. And all this based on an excellent musical quality in each of the members. What more can an organiser expect from a festive event?

We had a beautiful garden party, enlivened with the cheerful, jazzy, atmospheric music of Niveau Chapeau. Their enthusiasm and contagious music encouraged us to dance Appointments tip top in order. At our request, the trio studied a 'request' number, which also worked out great! Highly recommended!

The performance of Level Chapeau was really Chapeau. An unbelievable band that brings the familiar tunes fantastic. The twin brothers and their father brought repertoire that everyone is watching. The enthusiasm of this trio is enormous and drags the audience into the swong of their rhythm. A must for everyone who is looking for a fantasy music evening. Great band to work with. Keep up the good work, gentlemen. A big thumbs up from our choir group Canteclaer Hoevenen.

Meeting up for the concert was very easy and went smoothly. From the moment Niveau Chapeau started, our party was immediately ambiance! Everyone enjoyed and there was good dancing, even though it was a Sunday afternoon lunch ! Super - a lot of nice comments received from our guests. Even so much fun that one of our guests asked Niveau Chapeau to join them this month. We will think of you as soon as we have something to celebrate! Top band! Thank you so much!
