William of Orange & Anna of Egmond: A Love in Bronze
The living statue of William of Orange and Anna van Egmond brings to life a moving piece of national history. In a stylish bronze version they stand there, stately and still, like two figures from another time. But behind this apparent silence lies a warm and personal story of love, trust and loss.
A Marriage of Affection
William of Orange and Anna of Egmond married in 1551. Although it was an arranged marriage, their relationship grew into a close and loving union. Preserved letters show that they treated each other with affection and respect. Their marriage had a rare domesticity for the time.
Trust and Commitment
During William's absence, Anna managed his affairs,
demonstrating great trust. She was not only his wife, but also his support and companion. Their bond was strong and genuine. When Anna died in 1558 at a young age, it left William with what he himself described as "unspeakable sorrow."
Love in Motion
In this special act, their story comes to life through the audience. A love letter is conveyed between the two statues. Visitors are invited to carry the letter from one statue to the other, literally becoming part of this historic love connection. The subtle reactions of the statues make the moment intimate and special.
Petrified, but Alive
Although William and Anna stand seemingly motionless in bronze, small movements betray their presence. A look, a hand gesture or a response to the letter they received creates a magical moment of connection.
A Timeless Love Story
The living statue of William of Orange and Anna of Egmond is an elegant and moving act. It combines history with interaction and shows that love, even centuries later, can still be felt. A unique experience that touches and connects.
