Veldhuis & Kemper's musical style is a blend of pop, rock and cabaret. With a career that spans more than two decades, Veldhuis & Kemper remain a beloved and influential presence in the Dutch music and cabaret world.
Veldhuis & Kemper, the popular Dutch cabaret and musical theater duo consisting of Remco Veldhuis and Richard Kemper, began their joint career in the late 1990s. Their breakthrough came in 1999 when they took second place at the Cameretten Cabaret Festival. The duo combines humor, music and sharp observations in their work, which has earned them a unique place in the Dutch entertainment world.
The duo was brought together in 1997 by a mutual friend, who knew they both wanted to be on stage.[1] Neither of them had theater experience, but the very same night there appeared to be chemistry between the two.
In the two years that followed, they got to know each other better. In 1999 Veldhuis & Kemper
finished second behind Marc-Marie Huijbregts at the Cameretten Festival,[2] and in 2002 Veldhuis & Kemper premiered their first full-length cabaret program, Half zo Echt, with the final song Ik wou dat ik jou was. The song reached the number 2 position in the Dutch Top 40, became the most played Dutch song in 2003 and was voted the fourth best Dutch song of all time. In June 2003 the debut album Half zo Echt was released, containing eleven other songs besides Ik wou dat ik jou was. This album went gold and received an Edison Music Award in the category Best Kleinkunst/Luisterlied.
In 2004 the musical duo performed six times as supporting act for Marco Borsato in a sold-out Kuip in Rotterdam and performed several times as part of a larger program in Ahoy and the "Gala van het Nederlandse Lied". When Veldhuis & Kemper were nominated as Best Pop Group National at the TMF Awards in 2004, the duo said it was their best joke up to that point.
In November 2006, Veldhuis & Kemper premiered their fourth program, Time Heals All Sins. The program ran in the 2006/2007 season and was revived in 2007/2008. In total it was performed over 200 times.
In the 2014-2015 theater season, the duo hit theaters with their eighth program, Or the Gladioli.
After playing some try-outs of their new full-length show Hou dat vast in 2020, their theater tour had to be indefinitely halted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in the Netherlands.
