Waylon is een van de meest prominente zangers in Nederland. Zijn carrière begon toen hij in 2008 indruk maakte tijdens zijn auditie bij "Holland's Got Talent" met een indrukwekkende vertolking van "This Is a Man's World". Hoewel hij de talentenjacht niet won, was dit het startschot voor een glansrijke carrière
Waylon's musical style is an engaging blend of different genres. He moves effortlessly between country, rock, pop, and soul, and manages to put his own unique spin on each genre. His early work, such as the album "Wicked Ways," shows strong influences of soul and rock, while later albums such as "Heaven After Midnight" and "The World Can Wait" lean more toward country and pop.
Waylon, stage name of Willem Bijkerk (Apeldoorn, April 20, 1980), is a Dutch singer.
Bijkerk named himself after his idol Waylon Jennings. In 2008 he broke through with his album Wicked ways. With Ilse DeLange, as The Common Linnets, he was the Dutch entry for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. They achieved second place. As a
solo artist, he also represented the Netherlands at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, where he placed 18th.
Biography
Early years
Bijkerk began his musical career at a young age. From an early age, he was inspired by country music and played drums in/with the band West Virginian Railroad. Under the name Young Waylon (later changed to Waylon Young), he released his first cassette in 1994 (Still Growing), followed two years later by the album Watching The Way. Together with Carlo and Irene he appeared on the program Telekids, where he sang the chorus of the song Harry de Hengst. He signed with EMI in 1997 and was allowed to record a record in Nashville, which, however, did not materialize.
After the album Hard To Be (1999), Bijkerk lived and worked in the United States for a year in 2001, where he also performed on the show of his idol Waylon Jennings, with whom he also worked. Jennings died and Bijkerk returned to the Netherlands. He married at a young age, became a father of a son in 2002 and then divorced after three years of marriage.[1]
He took lessons from Lisa Boray and, after returning from America, started with the cover band Santa Rosa. He also sang in the band Millstreet.
Waylon participated in the preliminary rounds of the National Song Contest with Rachel Kramer as the duo "Rachel & Waylon" in 2005. Initially, they were to choose the English-language song Lovers Fight Delight, but later decided to participate with the song Leven als een beest. Winner of the National Song Contest was Glennis Grace.
