From acoustic Mississippi Delta blues to the more electric big city blues of Chicago. From living room concerts to festivals, Gumbo & The Monk always know how to captivate audiences.
The mentioned fee is an indication. Depending on travel distance, playing time, facilities, wishes, etc.
Gumbo & The Monk take you on a musical exploration of the history of the Blues. From the juke joints on the cotton plantations in the Mississippi Delta to the big city blues of Detroit and Chicago. With passionate vocals and intense (slide) guitar work, they revive the authentic sound of the Primal Blues.
To approach this sound as closely as possible, they largely use Gumbo's own built (or rebuilt) guitars, cigar box guitars and primitive tube amplifiers. Gumbo delved into the roots of the Blues, traveling several times to the southern US to research, study and experience the origins, traditions and culture of the Blues.
Born in southern Spain, The Monk was captivated from an early age by the raw
emotion and inspiration he recognized in the blues from flamenco. His sense of timing, expressive vocals and charisma did not go unnoticed. Arrow Classic Rock called him "the premier class of the Dutch blues," and his ode to the old blues brought him national attention on the likes of De Wereld Draait Door and De Beste Singer-Songwriter van Nederland.
In addition to some traditionals, they play songs by Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed, among others. Between songs they tell short stories and anecdotes about blues history, the songs and the instruments used.
Not for publication:
Gumbo & The Monk are finalists of the 2018 Dutch Blues Challenge and have performed at: including Asser Bluesdagen, Red Light Jazz Amsterdam, Bluesweekend Alkmaar, Delft Blues, Brielle Blues, Bluesroute Helmond, Blues in Wijk, Texel Blues, Smokin' Guitars Festival Germany, BSA Festival France, CBG Days Belgium. They also regularly play living room concerts, at Blues dance parties, in music pubs and in theaters.

Last September we had the big village festival "Harvest Moon" in Beets again for the first time since the covid. An American-inspired harvest festival. Think cowboy hats and boots. Well I already knew Servaas from a performance in our little church in the formation Pick 'n Shovel. Since Gumbo & the Monk play old blues, booking them was a done deal. Their style was spot-on for our party. Partly because of their inspiring performance it became a very well attended party. A thunderous success. Thank you very much guys and hopefully until next time. Definitely worth 5 out of 5 stars.

Also during the second concert of Gumbo & the Monk in our home theater, the duo captivated the audience from beginning to end. The duo, (Servaas Bollen & Fabian Garcia), back in their original line-up, made it very worthwhile again with the pure blues, the tones of the home-made instruments and their beautiful stories about the songs. If you are a lover of the blues, then a performance of Gumbo & The Monk is an absolute must!!!

Gumbo & The Monk's performance was considered one of the best Delta Blues performances by many of the music lovers at Holtberg Blues. A performance without embellishment, instrumentally and certainly vocally the duo's music came straight from their hearts to the guests. Some continued to feel the emotion after the concert in the evening. This is what music can bring about.

How much we enjoyed the performance! communication was very smooth. We chose that during the performance there was also a storytelling line. Definitely highly recommended!
