Matangi Quartet string quartet
Lenneke van Staalen - Indian violin
Heiko Dijker - tabla
Serendipity is a program in which the classical traditions from India and the West meet. Two very different cultures are brought together, without losing their identity and individual strength
Central to the project is Jacob ter Veldhuis. His groundbreaking composition 'Raga' - written for Lenneke van Staalen, Heiko Dijker and string orchestra - was the starting point for the collaboration of this special sextet. Thanks to its emotional eloquence, 'Raga' has already touched many people worldwide. Jacob TV was inspired in his writing by classical North Indian music, and composed a harmonic and rhythmic framework within which the soloists improvise, based on an old Indian raga, Yaman. Besides 'Raga' the programme will also include a new work Jacob ter Veldhuis wrote especially for Bombay Bazaar, 'Serendipity'

Heiko is a global ambassador for classical Indian music."

Jacob ter Veldhuis about 'Raga' & Bombay Bazaar:
"I found writing 'Raga' a fantastic challenge, not hindered by any knowledge of Indian classical music, except that I am a passionate lover. I came up with 'expandable patterns' for string orchestra, which could be adapted to the course of improvisation. Raga' turned out to be very successful, has been performed countless times, including with the Zeeuws Orkest. Heiko and Lenneke now play together with the adventurous Matangi Quartet. When this sextet asked me for a new composition, I immediately said 'yes! What I like about this work is a great deal of flexibility for the musicians: it has to be an ingenious mix of notation and improvisation. A work in progress, in which I have sessions with the ensemble over and over again during the composing process to test things out"
