As chairman of the day Charles Groenhuijsen listens above all. In preparation he discusses a number of questions with the speakers in order to be able to perform his task as well as possible during the event. With over 30 years of experience as a chairman, he has everything to make the event as dynamic as possible.

As a speaker, you mainly talk; as a chairman, listening is crucial. That starts with the preparation. I often call speakers beforehand: "What is the core of your message? Can you give any striking examples? Are there not a few too many slides in your PowerPoint? What is the one striking sentence that your audience should remember the next day? Humour is not forbidden of course!

I often advise organisers on how to set up a conference. That is not top science. A few simple "tips & tricks" often make it more exciting and dynamic. In the almost 30 years that I have been doing this, I have seen so much pass by.

Oh, and I have a reputation to uphold when it comes to not letting a programme run over. Then the breaks get shorter and you don't want that either. After all, the programme is interesting, but the breaks (meeting people, networking, snacks and drinks) are just as important. Right?
