In the 1980s, Justine Pelmelay sang in various bands. For example, she performed the well-known song “Zandvoort aan de Zee” with the Pasadena Dream Band and sang in Swinging Soul Machine and The Jody Singers. She also served as a backup singer for many artists on their singles and albums. In 1988, she sang in Gerard Joling’s backup choir, getting her first taste of the Eurovision Song Contest atmosphere. A year later, it was her turn to shine, and Justine competed in the National Song Contest with the song “Blijf Zoals Je Vent.” She received the most points and advanced to the Eurovision Song Contest. Unfortunately, due to a false note, Pelemelay finished in fifteenth place.

In the ’90s, Justine sang alongside TV chef Lonny Gerungan as the duo Justine & Marlon. They released three successful albums, all of which charted in the Top 20 Albums. On these albums, the duo performed Indonesian songs, allowing Justine to reconnect with her Indonesian roots. In the years that followed, Justine released several more singles, such as “The Man I Love,” “Hold Me,” and “A Friend Never Lets You Down.”

In 2005, Justine competed again in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “What You See Is What You Get.” However, she did not make it past the preliminary rounds. The following year, she recorded a new solo single: “Nothing’s Gonna Shut Me Up.” In 2007, Justine appeared in the theater show “The Soul of Motown.” During the show’s finale at the RAI in Amsterdam, The Three Degrees, The Supremes, and Jocelyn Brown performed as guest artists.

In 2011, Justine released the singles “Wereld Zonder Liefde” and “De Regen Voorbij.” The following year, she also appeared on the new single “Ik Laat Je Nooit Meer Gaan,” which was played on radio and TV. In 2012, Justine was aboard the Costa Concordia cruise ship that capsized off the Italian coast. In response to this event, she wrote the song “De tijd stond stil” together with her partner.

In 2013, inspired by her illness, she wrote the song “Doe wat je moet doen.” A new album by Justine is also expected, which will feature several songs she wrote herself. In addition to her many performances as a singer, Justine is also a television host and emcee at corporate events, and her voice can be heard in radio commercials.
