He performs poetic and compelling indie music in Dutch. Situate him somewhere between Lieven, Spinvis, Nick Drake and Radiohead. I would like to make time stand still in your home or garden for an hour and let people there dream away in my world.
Brent Beukelaer brings small unique stories from an alternative universe that is just around the corner. With his Dutch-language indie music, he creates a colorful world that is warm and fresh at the same time. And in that industry, not only does he occupy a special place, but he has also developed a very unique sound that cannot be compared to anyone else. Situate him somewhere between Lieven and Spinvis, two references that moreover underline that this is not an everyday talent. Influences of Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Nick Drake, Kommil Foo and The National can also be found in his music.
In 2016, he became the Belgian winner of the Nekka competition. In 2021, debut album Heen Zonder Weer was
buried among 4-star reviews. The record also earned an invitation to Jan Douwe Kroeske's legendary 2 Meter Sessies. In May 2024, Ramen Als Ogen was received at least as favourably, a second album on which, in addition to the great permanent line-up (Sander Cliquet and David Broeders), he collaborates with pianist and MIA winner (best musician) Nina Kortekaas (Portland, Sylvie Kreusch, Eefje De Visser), among others.
Both albums are full of beautiful, evocative songs. Brent's style is poetic and compelling, and each song feels like a mini-novel, with a 4-minute song telling a story that can linger in the listener's mind for months to come.
Several songs from both albums received airplay on VRT Radio 1 and 2, Radio Willy, NPO Radio 1 and 5. The single Ademwolk received the highest rotation on VRT Radio 1. August '24 saw the release of a stand-alone single, Achterin, based on the book Hotel Kosmos by the award-winning Yelena Schmitz. This single also received the highest rotation on Radio 1.
Brent is additionally a singer and frontman with The Radar Station (winner De Nieuwe Lichting 2020 on Stubru).
