Eric Beekes tells and sings about his encounters with Divas Adèle Bloemendaal, Simone Signoret, Sonia Gaskell, Caterina Valente, Hetty Blok, Leonard Bernstein and others. "A diva is like the sun you can warm yourself to, but if you get too close you burn."
Ever since I was a child, I have admired "big names," "stars," and divas in theater and film. In this program I mention ten names. There are, of course, many more, but I have made this choice because I have been able to experience them at close quarters myself. To me, a diva is a woman, or a man, who is essentially unattainable. She or he has a specific talent, which you cannot ignore.
They command attention, are often self-centered in nature, and are almost always put on a pedestal. A diva is admired on stage, but is often lonely in the dressing room. They keep their distance from others, they have something desirable, something intangible and often carry a
secret that you never fully discover. That is precisely what I find exciting and intriguing. I wanted to get to their core.
