Licht in het hoofd, voeten van de vloer, dorstige keel – een optreden van Unicorn laat de toehoorders nooit onberoerd. De opzwepende Keltische muziek van de folkband loopt doorgaans uit op een feelgood swingfeestje waarbij uit volle borst wordt meegezongen. Maar laat niemand zich in de luren leggen door het schijnbaar achteloze gemak waarmee de band zich op het podium presenteert, achter die vrolijke façade gaan rasmuzikanten schuil die elkaar ragfijn aanvoelen.
Aanjagers van het Ierse folkspektakel zijn accordeonist Martien Tijburg en gitarist John Kuiper, het duo vormt al sinds de oprichting (1996) het kloppende hart van Unicorn. Om hen heen maken leadzangeressen Renske den Uil /Jolanda Traarbach en de violistes Christina Knoll, Erna Sommer het UNICORN geheel compleet.
Stuk voor stuk professionals met een conservatoriumachtergrond, maar nu eenmaal ongeneeslijk behept met het Keltische folkvirus. De dames kleuren de Ierse en Schotse traditionals eigenwijs in, en stappen net zo makkelijk over op verwante genres als Bluegrass of Jiddische fiddlemuziek. Een aanstekelijk optreden met folk en fun en veel variatie is gegarandeerd. Van concert tot avondvullend feest.

veel gevraagde act op zomerfestivals. De band treedt standaard in een vierpersoonsbezetting op : een zangeres, een violiste en de vaste basis John Kuiper (zang/gitaar) en Martien Tijburg
(accordeon) . De band neemt het publiek moeiteloos mee en laat voelen wat er door de eeuwen heen leefde in Ierland..Inmiddels heeft de band vier cd’s op haar naam staan, waarvan
“A new Horizon” en de recentste cd “Destination unknown” onder de liefhebbers van Keltische muziek faam genieten. Unicorn weet het enthousiaste publiek tot de laatste minuut te
boeien maar ook te ontroeren. Gelachen wordt er om de humoristische aankondigingen van de nummers, een prachtige mix van emoties en voluit genieten. De band met conservatorium geschoolde artiesten vormt een eenheid, die je zelden tegen komt.
Onze muziek is zo veelzijdig dat wij op de play list alleen enkele voorbeelden hebben genoemd, maar is dus verre van volledig !! Unicorn gevraagd, alles geslaagd !! Sfeer gegarandeerd !

Before I was already hooked on the fresh folk sound of the four of them, now I'm completely addicted to this group of six. The addition of Martine and Betty brings even more variety to their repertoire. It's wonderful how Betty and Jolanda sing the song 'Cruel sister' together and I got goose bumps when Betty sang 'Motherland'.

Earlier I compared Unicorn with the cream on a glass of Irish coffee, I can now say that it certainly doesn't stop at one glass. With or without coffee, this tastes like whisky from the best distillers. It's amazing to hear how this Dutch set can match not only the atmosphere, but also the quality of a seasoned band from Ireland

Unicorn's second set was the icing on my Irish Coffee. Beautifully sung ballads - with tears rolling down them - alternated with exciting dance music. Martine Nijenhuis' Irish fiddle seemed almost to ignite at times. Rarely have I heard a solo rendition of the song 'Dueling Violins' in which every violin duelling would be superfluous. It was great! But I must not underestimate the quality of the other members of the band. A band that effortlessly remains fascinating throughout the entire evening

Last Friday evening there was a smashing performance in the Miente by the band Unicorn from North Holland. The repertoire they brought consisted mainly of Irish and Scottish music.
